Roy Scott brings a unique interpretation of one of the world’s most influential musical genres to positive learning experiences for children.
Atlanta — Hip-hop music connects the world.
The beat is catchy and the rhythm is infectious. But it’s the words behind the music that are influential. His musician-turned-app-developer Roy Scott realized this after a conversation with his son Justus.
“When I realized my son was repeating my music, promoting drugs, violence, and some bad things, everything changed for me,” he said. When I saw it, I realized that I couldn’t have that effect on him or anyone else.
change message
Scott brainstormed on how to create hip-hop music tailored to young children like his son. His unique take on one of the world’s most influential musical genres brings positive learning experiences to children.
He created healthy hip-hop. He is an organization that keeps the beat of the music and changes the message. The app lets kids listen to hip hop songs to celebrate diversity and encourage learning through music, movement and mindfulness.
“The vision has always been to become an iconic children’s brand. To become a household name,” he said. “That was always the vision. I didn’t know what route it would take to get there, so there were quite a few twists and turns.”
Initially, Healthy HipHop focused solely on music. The brand has since shifted its focus to the tech sector. The group partners with parents and schools to offer programs that “emphasize social-emotional learning, mental and physical health, and academic success.”
bring culture to the classroom
Today, the platform is used by more than 100,000 children nationwide and has approximately 5,000 active users. Scott hopes to partner with school systems across the country to bring culture directly into the classroom.
“We know hip-hop is the language our young people speak. Parents are looking for positive options,” he said. “You can still be cool and have swag, but we can focus on education, financial literacy, and other things besides playing sports and hitting the streets.”
Scott said he hopes the initiative will also inspire young people to enjoy learning about all topics, especially culture.
“By connecting with children through music, through expression, and on their level, you can get them excited about school and integrated into the system,” he said. To reach out, we have to take a different approach.”
Healthy HipHop recently signed a deal with a school in Texas, paving the way to further expand Scott’s vision.
