Milwaukee — Alcohol is the most commonly used addictive substance in Wisconsin, according to the Department of Health.
So one bar offers an alternative.
Whether you’re traveling away from alcohol or want to try something new, Honeybee Sage Wellness and Apothecary is the city’s first alcohol-free cocktail bar. It’s already making an impact in Milwaukee’s Bronzeville neighborhood.
Owner Angela Mallett says, “There are many health benefits that can come from adopting and balancing alternative habits.
Honeybee Sage offers a variety of non-alcoholic cocktails. We also specialize in natural health products such as herbs and herbal teas.
“We don’t just offer medicated herbal teas, we support and promote a balanced lifestyle and a lifestyle that allows you to slow down a bit and be less stressed,” said Mallett. “It triggers a great many different diseases and can even trigger alcoholism.”
Mallet said he decided to give this to the community after watching his father pass away after battling alcoholism.
“This is part of my father’s legacy,” said Mallett. “My father passed away about four months after I opened his first Bee Sage, dying of alcohol-related organ failure.”
She said this is a space for those in recovery, those who have simply chosen not to drink, or those who want to add balance to their lifestyle.
“We didn’t want to introduce alcohol into a space that offers healing alternatives or medicines,” she said.
Drinks are made with fresh fruit, natural sweeteners, and alcohol-free spirits. They discourage the use of processed sugars and opt to use ingredients such as honey, maple and agave.
According to Mallet, there is already a diverse group of people who frequent the café and appreciate the space.
“When you walk in the door, everything else adds to the vibe and the love we want to make sure,” she said.
