RICHMOND, Virginia (WHSV) – Governor Glenn Youngkin announced today that family-owned Wholesome Foods Inc. is adding a new USDA-inspected slaughterhouse to its Shenandoah County location. announced that it will expand its meat processing business.
The company plans to source nearly all of its new facility’s livestock from farms in Virginia, according to a release, creating a significant new market for local cattle and pigs.
Wholesome Foods was founded in 1964 by Dean and Syvilla Pence as a delivery service for poultry, meat and eggs to the Washington DC market. Since then, the company has grown into a full-fledged food distributor.
“Our agricultural sector, Virginia’s largest private industry, is powered by the productive diversity and entrepreneurial spirit of families like the Pence family who have been serving the Shenandoah community for over 50 years.” said Governor Glenn Youngkin.
Wholesome Foods President Wes Pence said, “Through the AFID program, we are excited to expand our business with the help of Commonwealth and Shenandoah County. “This expansion will improve our capacity, add jobs to our workforce, and provide much-needed services to our communities and local farmers for years to come.”
