Milwaukee — Cole Bucek is a junior at Greendale High School.
He spent a recent Monday night coding to program a robot for the upcoming First Tech Challenge.
“It’s mostly programmed in Java,” says Bucek. “We have a lot. It’s a work in progress, so there are some errors, but other than that, it’s been working pretty well so far.”
Bucek is getting better at writing JavaScript. A language used to program computer code. Last semester, he didn’t know how to write it.
“I didn’t know this language. I’m coding in the same language that I coded in there now, and I didn’t know it then,” Bucek recalls. “I was still learning then, but I think I know it pretty well now.”
He taught himself so that he and two friends could create apps for the Congress App Challenge. Evie Skibicki is one of his friends.
“We are a community-based team and are always looking for ways to help children become healthier, learn STEM, and benefit our generation and the future of our world,” said Skibicki. .
She, Bucek and Riess Steinman came up with the idea to create an app called “Brain Food: Nutri Quiz”. Steinman loaded the questions into the app.
“How many glasses of water do you need a day? What makes a good breakfast, and which vegetables should you eat more than others?” Steinman said, referring to the questions the app asks.
They submitted their app to the Congressional App Challenge along with their pitch video. In December, they learned they had won the challenge for Wisconsin’s 1st congressional district.
It was very exciting for a team that no one knew how to write in that code language.
“I just got this language and was blown away by the obviously amazing things I’ve done with it,” Bucek said.
“It really opened our eyes to show that anything is possible,” added Skibiki.
The school and its coach, Aleks Skbicki, are very proud. They say these kids are gearing up for life outside of school.
“No matter what field you’re in, technology, coding will have an impact in the future. These kids are growing up right at the heart of it,” said Aleks Skibicki.
Grow at its core and start learning in a potential career field while also earning cool approval in Congress.
