Green Bay, Wisconsin — Nearly two blocks away, Kurt Rogers recognizes children crossing his corner on 9th Avenue in Green Bay.

“They talk to you. You can learn about school projects, classes and sports,” said crossing guard Rogers. “It’s kind of nice, like you did something.”
His post is a crosswalk near Kennedy Elementary School on the west side of the city.
It’s early January and it’s raining. Working in those conditions is part of the job, but he’s dressed for it.
“It was raining today so it was a little slow. My parents who live nearby will give them a ride,” said Roger. “There are some people walking in the rain, but they live nearby, so it’s not too bad for them. In the downpour part, well, I think everyone gets soaked.”

Steven Sannes is Cross Safe’s Crossing Security Supervisor. He’s the company that runs the program in Green Bay.
We are looking for 3 full-time employees and someone to fill the vacancies for the rest of the school year.
“My average age is probably 65, 66,” he said. “They’ve just retired, they’re looking for something to do, they’re bored, so we’re a good place for that.”
There are more than 40 intersections in the city, and crossing guards work to keep children safe.
Green Bay Police Chief Kevin Warich said the guards provide an essential service to the community.
“Today is a perfect example. provides the security every parent wants, wants and expects.”
Mr. Rogers, a recently retired city employee, said he strides even on rainy days.
“Weather is something you have to deal with. Cold, rain, whatever,” he said. “But you get great spring weather. So it goes both ways.”
