The Recording Academy will celebrate 50 years of Grammy Hip-Hop with an all-star performance featuring Missy Elliott, Public Enemy, Grandmaster Flash, Queen Latifah, RUN-DMC, Lil Wayne, Rakim and more.
The Academy announced Thursday that past Grammy hosts LL Cool J will introduce the segment, dedicated to hip-hop. Questlove serves as music director and producer, with his band The Roots performing on stage and Black Thought narrating.
Other members participating in the performance include De La Soul, Big Boi, Scarface, Salt-N-Pepa and Spinderella, Grandmaster Mele Mel & Scorpio/Ethiopian King, Ice-T, Busta Rhymes with Spliff Star, The Lox and Method. Includes Man. , Raheim, Lil Baby, Too Short, Future, Nelly, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Swizz Beatz, DJ Drama, Glorilla.
Questlove will produce the segment alongside Jesse Collins, Fulwell 73’s Patrick Menton, Creative Producer and Choreographer Fatima Robinson, and Questlove Manager and LNU President Shawn Gee.
“For 50 years, hip-hop has not only been a defining force in music, but a profound influence on our culture,” said Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. in a statement. “Its contributions to art, fashion, sports, politics and society cannot be overstated. It’s just the beginning of a year-long celebration of the music genre.”
The performance is part of Paramount’s initiative to mark the 50th anniversary of hip-hop. CBS will partner with the Academy to air a special hip-hop music event later this year.
Trevor Noah will host the Grammy Awards, which will be broadcast live on CBS from the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. Kendrick Lamar is a top-nominated rapper competing for eight honors, including Album, Song and Record of the Year.Other award-nominated rap artists include Jay Z, DJ Khaled and Drake , Pusha T, Future, Rat, Young Thug, Gunna and Jack Harlow.
