Milwaukee — Groundhog day is just around the corner.
Gordy, the groundhog at the Milwaukee County Zoo, is ready to forecast the weather for 2023.
Will there be six more weeks of winter, or will spring come? That’s the question on everyone’s mind.
Wisconsiners can catch Gordy’s predictions online on February 2 at 9 a.m. from the zoo’s Facebook page.
The event will be streamed live from the Northwestern Mutual Family Farm and hosted by County Commissioner David Crowley and Zoo Director Amos Morris.
On clear days, Gordy can see his shadow and return to his burrow for another six weeks of winter.
But if he doesn’t see it, it means early spring following an already warmer-than-normal winter.
There are also fun activities for those watching together. Depending on Gordy’s predictions, there are several groundhog coloring books to choose from. You can download it here.
You can also play groundhog bingo. To do this, simply download a bingo card on his website at the zoo. Next, follow the ceremony and mark the words as you listen to what the moderator says. Once Bing is complete, submit your card to zoo.specialevents@milwaukeecountywi.gov. A random winner will be selected to win a groundhog-themed prize.
Born and raised in Indiana, Gordy is a favorite with zoo visitors. She will be 5 years old on April 6th of this year. She also loves building nests out of paper bags and newspapers.
I hope Gordy doesn’t see his shadow, and that winter dog days are behind us.
