On Tuesday afternoon (January 17), the White House was buzzing with excitement as the Warriors celebrated the 2021-2022 NBA Championship in a ceremony hosted by President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. The crowd also boasted of Bay Area hip-hop royalty, as E-40, Too Short, Mister FAB, and media personality his Sway Calloway attended the reception.
Superstar point guard Stephen Curry presented customized team jerseys to President Biden and Vice President Harris. Vice President Harris beamed when she introduced the team. “As a very proud daughter of Oakland, Calif., and as the Vice President of the United States, it’s a great deal of personal pride to say that Dub Nation is at home,” she said of the number one jersey. Curry joked that he wanted the jersey on the wall of the Oval Office. “Hopefully I can come back and see if it’s there,” he said.
It was the first time since 2015 that the Warriors have been honored at the White House. Former President Donald Trump officially canceled the team invitation in 2017 after Curry said he was not interested in visiting. The Warriors were also not invited after their 2018 championship win. “The Golden State Warriors will always be welcome in this White House,” President Biden said in a statement. Earlier in the day, Curry and coach Steve Kerr spoke to reporters in the White House briefing room, saying Curry was in favor of government efforts to bring back WNBA star Britney Griner, who was imprisoned in Russia late last year. Bay’s greatest rapper has long been an avid Warriors supporter, and E-40 and Mr. FAB were regulars at their home games at the Chase Center in downtown San Francisco and earlier at the Oakland Coliseum. They were spotted taking numerous photos with Harris alongside former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, who is now a member of the Biden administration.
