Germany and France announced joint support for “two permanent members of the African Continental Security Council”.
German Foreign Minister Annalena Beerbock and French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna said the move would improve bilateral relations between Africa and other continents on the Securitz issue.
“So Katrina[Catherine Colonna, French Foreign Minister ed.]and I, we are partners in Europe too, and as the German Foreign Minister, we agree that the world in 2023 will not be the world after the Second World War. We support two permanent seats on the Security Council for the African continent, and to strengthen our cooperation, we need to work together bilaterally. Not only is it important, but so are the intercontinental relations in the name of our people.
The two foreign ministers were in Addis Ababa on Thursday to support peace in Tigray, more than two months after the agreement that ended the conflict in northern Ethiopia.
Ministers said the EU is ready to re-engage with Ethiopia once the ceasefire is respected and a transitional judicial mechanism is put in place.
Mozambique is the latest African country to join the non-permanent UN Security Council in January.
