PITTSBURGH (AP) — Jake Guentzel scored 33 seconds into overtime for the Pittsburgh Penguins in a late rally to a 4-3 win over the Anaheim Ducks on Monday night.
The Penguins took the lead in the third period, but Genzel took the lead with his 18th goal of the season when Brian Last equalized with 25 seconds left in regulation and Pittsburgh took the two-game slide.
Jason Zucker scored his 11th goal of the season on his 31st birthday, while Evgeny Malkin added his 15th for Pittsburgh. Casey DeSmith stopped his 26 shots to take his second win in the last seven starts.
John Klingberg’s short-handed goal with 8:46 left in regulation put the Ducks apart, and Anaheim entered their fifth road game of the season when Trevor Zeglas hit a shot from the slot with just over four minutes to go. I realized that I had a chance to win.
Pittsburgh increased pressure late, and Rust broke through to help Penguin escape.
Adam Henrique also scored for the duck. Pittsburgh native John Gibson played a lot back in his hometown. Gibson stopped 42 shots, but he had no answer when Genzel broke into him in the second half and scored with a wrist shot from close.
Anaheim is destined for the NHL draft lottery. The Penguins have been postseason regulars for nearly two decades.
Still, Pittsburgh has reached the halfway point of the season and is struggling to play consistently. Injuries along the blue line to veteran defensemen Chris Letang and Jeff Petrie didn’t help. Their absence has weakened Pittsburgh’s firepower, contributing to a slump that makes it difficult to score goals.
Pittsburgh called on forward Jonathan Gruden to help bring some energy to the fourth line, and the rookie hit the post in the first period.
Zucker, whose spirited play is one of the few bright spots in recent times, led the Penguins 4:16 into the first. Enrique equalized at 17:50 after a flurry in front of Pittsburgh’s net and deflected DeSmith’s rebound. .
Malkin put Pittsburgh in front with 8:46 pushing the puck past the disorganized Gibson.
The recently shaky DeSmith, who was pulled just seven minutes away in a loss to Winnipeg on Friday, almost shocked them late in the third period when Klingberg and Zeglas ducked forward.
