Gastonia, North Carolina — 12 shoe stores. Choose from cinnamon peach praline to caramel apple and of course peach, blackberry and strawberry.
12 kinds of banana pudding. Some opt for chocolate chocolate chips, while others opt for coconut cream, bourbon pecans, or what they call OG (regular banana his pudding).
Or, like many, opt for a dessert flight of four cobblers or a mix or match of banana pudding.
The owner of The Peach Cobbler Factory says he started the new business because he believed in sweets and that Gaston County residents needed a place to serve a variety of desserts.
‘This is a great place,’ says owner Sparkle Agnew, located behind Walgreens on the busy corner of Franklin Boulevard and Cox Road. “We serve sweets from cold to hot. We also sell cookies and five types of cinnamon rolls.
“People want sweets that are not available in restaurants,” she said.
Heading to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Mr. and Mrs. Ronnie and Ryz Allen of Cherryville were drawn to the idea of taking two cobblers with them.
“Definitely not,” said Ronnie Allen, who heard about the business from the couple’s daughter, who knows how much her parents love shoe stores.
“It’s as American as mom’s apple pie,” Ronnie Allen said of his dessert of choice.
DoorDash driver Carrie Robbins says she frequently picks up food at the store for customers, many of whom are repeat customers. When she told Agnew that she had never tried her food herself, Agnew gave her a try of strawberry-banana pudding.
“That’s good,” Robbins said. “very good.”
Over the past 17 years, Agnew has worked in a variety of jobs in Mecklenburg County, from social services to the sheriff’s office to child support. She left in July and opened The Peach Cobbler Factory after her Thanksgiving, she said.
“I started out with a conviction. My father passed away in October 2021 and he always told me to follow my dreams,” Agnew said. “His dream for me was to do what I love. It was to serve people.”
Agnew greeted every customer who walked in the store. She wants to create a family-friendly atmosphere that makes people leave happier than when they first set foot in.
“I love helping people, whether it’s by putting a smile on their face or by providing the best desserts in the business,” she said. ”
When newcomers to her business were asked what they would like to order, Agnew began recommending products—sweet potato pecan cobbler, red velvet banana pudding, blackberry peach cobbler, and cherry swirl banana pudding.
“Everyone is fine,” she said finally. “That’s why so many people take Desert Flight. They want to try a little bit of everything but can’t decide.”
All cobblers come with vanilla ice cream. In the store, “Peach Tea”, cold brew coffee, and milk are also sold.
