Hayes, Kansas – Just one year ago, Fort Hays State University partnered with the Hays Academy of Hair Design to give Hayes Academy students the opportunity to take four business courses while working towards a Business Essentials Certificate. bottom.
Two students, Dawson McDonagh and Afrika Kaman King, were the first to complete the program this fall semester.
Through this partnership, students enroll in at least one FHSU class, pay the appropriate tuition fees, and receive full access to Fort Hays State University, including participation in all student activities and organizations, health and fitness services, and access to sporting events. can enjoy a wide range of services offered to students of , including on-campus student residence options.
Four classes developed by Fort Hays State University make up the Business Essentials Certificate. Classes are Management Practices, Personal Finance, Accounting and Tax Fundamentals, and Social Media Marketing.
Each of these classes runs every Monday from 4:30pm to 6:30pm for eight weeks, so they do not conflict with Hays Academy student hours.
Dr. Stacey Smith, Chair of the Department of Applied Business, worked with faculty to develop the certificate course.
“These students have already taken some business classes at the academy,” says Smith. “This partnership will help them strengthen and build their business knowledge.”
For Dawson McDonough, the program fits perfectly into her future plans.
“When I learned about this program, I had already graduated from HAHD and was going to Fort Hays to pursue a degree in business,” says McDonough. “I saw this program as an opportunity to better myself for my clients and businesses and to increase my knowledge of what it takes to own and/or run a business.”
Originally from Loveland, Colorado, McDonagh has lived in Hayes for nearly three years. She plans to work full-time at her Inspire Salon in Plainville while earning an associate’s degree in business through FHSU.
With four different class start dates in February, May, August and October at Hays Academy, each cohort attends classes for nine months and completes 1,500 clock hours, so finding housing is It can be very difficult.
Dr. Dennis King, FHSU’s Associate Vice President of Enrollment Management, pointed to housing as one of the barriers this partnership will help students overcome.
“For example, students at the academy starting with the October start date can get a place to live right away instead of trying to find a house or apartment in the middle of the college semester,” King said. “This fall, he will have two students in his housing on campus, and in the spring he will have three.”
FHSU provides monthly housing contracts to Hays Academy students. This service has the potential to benefit all Hays Academy students, including those enrolled in the Academy’s three-month Nail Technology program.
“This program benefits everyone,” said FHSU alumnus Len Melvin of Hays Academy. “This will help the community by attracting students to areas where many remain after completing these programs. It will help both us and his FHSU recruitment.”
“I am very grateful to the family at Hayes Academy and to everyone at Fort Hays who took the extra time to spend the night teaching these classes,” McDonough said. “I highly recommend it to anyone considering taking these classes. Not only was it a wealth of information, but I was also able to build relationships with the instructors and other students. I’m so glad he got to experience both HAHD and he FHSU.”
