As a professor, Method Man doesn’t call attendance, doesn’t care if anyone is late, and doesn’t check bullet points in the syllabus. “I hate studio anxiety. Doc is incredible,” says Meth, his how tall Co-star and longtime friend Redman when asked about the collaboration by a student. “I give credit where credit is due. That man, he is the music…The reason I said ‘anxiety’ is because you want to be at your best…. This na goes straight to her Ether spitting booth every day. And you have to catch up, son. Both outside the studio and on stage. He helped me a lot in my creative process. Big Bra shaped me into the MC I am today.
Meth stays all night for revelations, advice on everything from rap battle MC geniuses (“The best rappers in the world – these massafs – they’re running the culture right now”) to the “miserables.” , guidance, and insight sharing. Eight years in a row making music, building hooks, and achieving goals for his legendary hip-hop family, his Wu-Tang Clan. And that’s Wu, who was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
“I want that on the crew,” Metz declares. “We have a very strong interest in it.”
Rhythmic Ecology, dedicated to hip-hop mental health, is just one of the courses offered as part of the curriculum at virtual school Pendulum Ink Academy. One of Pen Ink’s main goals is to “foster creativity through lyricism.”
Pendulum was conceived, developed and co-cultivated by Bronx wordsmith Mickey Factz, who rose to prominence in the rap world during the heyday of the blogging era in the mid-2000s. He quickly became proficient in multimedia marketing (Mickey’s marketing firm and indie label GFC New York included Nipsey Hussle in its roster of clients seeking branding help) and freestyle. , mixtapes, and song collaborations that showcased his wordplay, which led him to success.on the cover of XXL The coveted 2009 Freshman issue.
Along with his cover stars Wale, Kid Cudi, and Currency, Mickey is appointed leader of the new school. Fast forward to his 2019: Mickey was ten years into his next life and pondering what would happen next in his life.
“It was an epiphany moment,” recalls Factz, sitting in his office in an Atlanta skyscraper. After 10 years in the game, he felt he had reached his limit. “I was like, ‘Now this feels like a dead end job for me. I work album by album. This doesn’t make sense to me. What am I going to do when it’s time to retire?’ I’ve been thinking a lot about retirement, so I’m like, ‘You know what?
Mickey began researching how to actually teach without a degree and came to the conclusion that without a qualification, it would be nearly impossible. The rapper (real name Mark Williams) attended his NYU and was a paralegal at a law firm, but dropped out of school in 2007 and quit his job to focus on his rap career. rice field. Regardless, Mickey says there weren’t many schools trying to make hip-hop an actual course in 2019.
Then, while the pandemic hit and many of us were stuck at home, Mickey focused on his masterclass. Hip-hop icons such as Nas and Timbaland paid to give virtual lectures. Facts felt he had found a path to retirement from rapping.
“I sent them a DM saying, ‘I’d love to work with you guys,'” recalls Factz. “They hit me back hours later, ‘Dude, don’t call us. We’ll call you. That was January 2021.’
“I’m from the Bronx,” Mickey continued with a small chuckle before revealing that he’d found new motivation after MasterClass’s rejection. He said, ‘Oh, I’m going to do my own masterclass.
On December 1, 2021, Mickey gave a lecture to an online class of 10 people. He was hired for $250 to speak for his hour. Facts realized that not only could he teach his students, but his dreams could grow. “You can’t do a hip-hop masterclass in one class,” he explained. “I can’t do it in writing.”
Facts turned to a friend, battle rapper Chilla Jones, for help. Jones began contacting some of his peers and soon his five-man team was formed. Together they came up with an eight-month curriculum and the Pendulum Ink Academy was created.
In addition to the Academy’s core Brain Trust (who all teach classes), Pendulum is staffed by accredited university professors, and courses like rap theory encourage students to tune to rhythms and beats. Learn how to rhyme. Rap theory is taught by jazz musician Comikbook Cam. Chira, on the other hand, teaches advanced techniques. Pendulum His ink has 35 copyrighted laps of his technique, naming the skills the MC has displayed throughout his career.
“Some of these courses were rejected by colleges,” says Factz. “Hip-hop criminology he got rejected by three colleges.
Pendum Ink launched last February, but Factz recalls not knowing exactly what to expect. “On February 24th, we had the first people sign up,” he says. “They paid the $2,000 in tuition in full. And then every day after the 24th, for about 45 days, people kept paying. I was like, ‘Okay, here’s something.’this is a beta [stage]Only 6 courses: Rap Theory, Advanced Rap Technique, Rhythm Ecology, Mickey Money Class, Battle Rap, and Content Creation Class.
Soon after, Mickey enrolled some of his closest friends and associates as guest teachers for these classes. “I told them there was a school and then I gave them an explanation and asked if they wanted to teach or give lectures,” he remembers. “They said, ‘Yes.’ I said, ‘Okay, I’ll pay.’ ”
Little brothers Phonte, Masta Ace and Cory Gunz were all on his first phone call.Fittingly, Inspectah Deck was the first guest lecturer on Pendulum: The Wu-Tang Clan Enter Wu Tang (36 rooms) It was the first album Mickey bought with his own money when he was a kid. “Reviving an artform is essential, and Pendulum Ink does it,” he says Deck.
“It is a gift to be taught by a living legend,” says Pendulum student Al Billups. He signed up and attended his recent Rhymecology class at Method Man. “The opportunity to peel back the layers of composition with the actual creators is a treat for fans of the culture. Attending a Pendulum Ink session was a fantastic experience designed to help the MCs better understand the nuances of lyricism. I was exposed to the education ecosystem.”
Pendulum Ink’s graduation is set for February 26, 2023. Van B has been confirmed as the starting speaker. Veteran hip-hop journalist Sway will also be joining Big KRIT, Stalley and Skyzoo for the ceremony.
Pendulum Ink also launched a non-profit called Pen Pals, where children ages 7 to 17 can learn to MC. Pen pals also serve as spaces for prominent MCs to learn how to teach. Factz said he hopes some of these MCs will one day become university professors.
“We want our lexicon to have a crash course,” he says. “You can do it your own way, but structure is very important.”
One of Pen Ink’s students has been hired by Boston’s Fredrick Pilot Middle School to teach children ages 11 to 14 in part of the Academy’s program. Facts himself, meanwhile, has accepted an offer to teach at the University of Hawaii, and he will be teaching for one month at a time, in March, July, and November.
Pendulum Ink also delves into the real-world ink game by launching its own textbook next year, featuring a preface written by Big Daddy Kane. The new roster of professors to teach in his second year at the Academy is shaping up to be impressive. Big Boi, Pharoahe Monch, Rah Digga, KRIT, Lord Finesse, AZ and DMC are all locked up to deliver lectures, while Black Thought has agreed to be the 2024 starting speaker upon graduation.
“Ten years from now, I’ll be 50,” says Factz. [physical] schools nationwide. We plan to have one in the Bronx by 2027, then one here in Atlanta, and one in LA. We want to create jobs and opportunities where young students and seniors can earn money. It is important that culture remains within us. Mind you, if I didn’t do this, someone else who doesn’t belong to that culture would have. “
