Last year, the Milwaukee Bucks First NBA title in 50 years, Madison/Milwaukee hip-hop artist Jerome Hunt, who goes by the stage name Romy, was courtside. As a lifelong Bucks fan, this moment wasn’t just a thrill, it was the inspiration for his hit “Fear the Deer.”
Growing up, Hunt spent countless afternoons and weekends watching his father play against Milwaukee Bucks players. He watched a one-on-one basketball game take place at the Martin Luther King His Junior Community Center in Milwaukee, where his father was the recreation director.
The Rec Center was home to Milwaukee’s NBA Pro-Am League for most of the 1980s, and Hunt was given a front-row seat to his idols.
“I just had to get up close and personal. I became a waterboy…and that’s when I fell in love with it,” Hunt said of basketball and the Bucks.
There are several moments in Bucks history that stand out in Hunt’s mind. When the Bucks selected Glenn “Big Dog” Robinson as the No. 1 overall pick in the 1994 draft.
Time and time again, season ticket holder Hunt fell in love with the Bucks.
“The same thing happened when they drafted Giannis. [Antetokounmpo in 2013],” he said. “It was another big comeback.”
With that comeback, the team won its first NBA title since 1971. The victory still haunts Hunt and much of Wisconsin.

“It meant everything,” said Hunt. “With all sorts of brave peaks in the team, I felt like the sixth man… I was just there and inspired by the team.”
Bringing home the championship sent sparks of creativity through Hunt. Standing courtside after the win, the lyrics to his hit “Fear the Deer” unraveled before his eyes.
“I just got into grind mode. I need to capture this inspiration and how I’ve been coming to Bucks games since I was a kid and all of this culminated in this moment,” he said. , “I had to capture it. Deer” is it.
Some of Hunt’s favorite lyrics on the song don’t just look back at last year’s glory, they look to the future.
