Milwaukee — Sheboygan’s Above and Beyond Children’s Museum is temporarily closed due to the effects of the extreme cold.
The museum’s executive director, Jackie Erdman, said she received an unexpected phone call on Christmas morning.
The extreme cold has caused the museum’s heating and cooling system to malfunction. As a result, pipes burst, flooding parts of the building and damaging spaces throughout the museum.

Erdman said the holiday season is an important time of the year for museums, so it couldn’t have happened at the worst possible time.
Erdman said: “This cold season [are] Where does most of our income come from?”
The damage has not only affected their businesses, but also many families in the area.
“It breaks our hearts that our family and members can’t enjoy this space when they need it most,” said Erdman.
Most of the damage was on the lower levels. Erdman said there was about two inches of water that turned into ice.

The museum can be opened once repairs are complete, including repairs to the building’s sprinkler system. Erdman estimates that it will take him a month at a minimum.
The museum is closed for now, but Aardman is optimistic and hopes the museum will reopen to families.

“Unfortunately, this is the risk of having a historic site,” she said. I know, and I can’t wait to do that.”
