Madison, Wisconsin (AP) — Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers announced Monday that he has promoted the deputy secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs to lead an agency that has been plagued by frequent allegations of abuse and poor care.
James Bond, a disabled U.S. Marine Corps veteran who has worked for the Department for years, is the first openly LGBTQ person in the state’s history to head a cabinet office, according to the Legislative Comptroller’s Office. . The governor’s news release did not provide details of Bond’s disability or military service.
“James has been a dedicated leader of the DVA for more than a decade, serving as a divisional and Wisconsin veteran and deputy secretary,” Evers said in a statement. With his extensive national service, I have no doubt he will bring a wealth of experience, knowledge and expertise to this role as secretary.”
Bond takes over an agency that has been plagued with care home and nursing home problems. A recent Milwaukee Journal Sentinel study found that Union Grove’s veterans’ home ranks among the worst in the nation in terms of violations and fines.
His appointment fills a gap left by former Secretary Mary Kohler, who retired earlier this month.
