Bringing entrepreneurs, economic developers, innovators and future business owners together for the 8th Annual Mississippi Entrepreneurship Forum April 12-13 in Hattiesburg.
Coordinated by the University of Mississippi’s Grisham McLean Institute for Public Service and Community Engagement, the event aims to educate attendees about entrepreneurship and the future of entrepreneurship in Mississippi. The institute receives planning support from a team that includes members of all Mississippi institutions of higher learning, private universities, and major statewide organizations.
“The Mississippi Entrepreneurship Forum helps connect universities and colleges with communities and business partners across the state to raise awareness of the various entrepreneurial initiatives underway,” said Albert Nylander, director of the Institute. said. “This is also a time for university faculty, students working in the entrepreneurial field to network and share ideas for growing and sustaining economic development within Mississippi.”
Registration and speaker information can be found on the event website. This forum provides aspiring business owners and thriving entrepreneurs an opportunity to share practical information on building a business.
Participants will learn best practices, as well as resources and strategies available to entrepreneurs from higher education institutions and other leading organizations.
College students in Mississippi have the opportunity to participate in NextUp! Student Pitch Competition on April 13th. This competition aims to showcase student-led startups and provide feedback.
New this year, selected entrants will be paired with mentors from the Mississippi Small Business Development Center (headquartered in Ole Miss) to prepare for the competition.
Competitors will receive feedback from a jury of mixed business owners, business resource providers, and other business leaders across the state. Winners receive cash prizes that help grow their business.
Contest entries will be accepted online from January 18th through February 27th.

“Our hope is that students will use this as an opportunity to meet other student entrepreneurs and build relationships with leaders across the state in addition to the instruction they receive on campus.”
The Mississippi State Department of Development is the lead sponsor of NextUp! Enter the competition with additional funding from Innovate Mississippi and other donors.
The 2023 Mississippi Entrepreneurship Forum is part of an initiative to promote entrepreneurship and economic development, funded by a grant from the Robert M. Hearin Support Foundation. Previous events have been held in Clarksdale, Tupelo, Greenwood, Oxford, Jackson, Ridgeland and Vicksburg.
