Kansas City, Missouri — Aside from the cost of baking cupcakes, many problems can be solved with well-iced cupcakes.
“Last summer, things started to skyrocket,” said Emily Thomas, owner of Muffin Top Bakery. I think a lot of our egg problems stem from chicken problems, which are still flowing and actually getting worse. ”
The problem with these chickens points to an outbreak of bird flu that limits the number of eggs available nationwide.
Emily says a box of 60 eggs she had to buy used to cost less than $9. FOX4 found them listed at Walmart for her $20.
“We don’t want to raise prices, and we don’t want to raise prices for freshly baked goods, but ultimately we have to,” says Thomas.
With no other choice, Thomas turned to Facebook.
“Prices like this are killing local small business restaurants and bakeries like ours,” Thomas wrote online.
Commenters tried to help by telling her about deals they found at other stores and encouraging her to find local farms to work with. Thomas says he always compares prices between stores that can buy in bulk because he needs to buy from a location that meets the specific requirements of a commercial kitchen.
She cannot buy from large suppliers who deliver food to large restaurants.
“I can’t buy that amount or store that amount,” Thomas said.
All she can do is hold out until prices drop again.
“For the most part people are very understanding,” Thomas said. “We are a homemade bakery and I would explain that everything is made here.”
About a dozen bird flu cases have been confirmed on both sides of the state line, with the latest confirmations coming in both states last week.
That means isolating or downing birds to prevent the spread of bird flu.
