entrepreneur who appeared in Dragon’s Den This week, we baffled the internet with equations branded all over t-shirts.
Paper Engineer blew away Peter Jones, Deborah Meaden, Sarah Davis, Tokar Suleiman, and Stephen Bartlett in a “totally unique” pop-up chess set.
While the dragons raved about his invention, many of the viewers at home scratched their heads at his outfit.
People took to Twitter to guess the meaning of the expression on his T-shirt. It says “1.d4 d5 2.c4”.
Who would have thought it would become such a hot topic?
“Please translate his t-shirt please,” tweeted a confused viewer.
“I’m curious about his T-shirt.” Dragon’s Den written by a fan.
A third person wrote, “I got distracted trying to crack the code on the t-shirt.”
Another fan asked on Twitter, “Is anyone determined to crack the t-shirt code before the dragon asks?”
While David’s t-shirt equation puzzled many, others were clued in by a very clever reference.
Let’s just say chess players and fans menu Actress Anya Taylor-Joy was a few steps ahead.
One Twitter user said:
Another tweeted using the queen emoji: Did anyone else get his t-shirt reference of him?”
Someone else wrote: Brilliant Guy got offers from everyone. This T-shirt was on my mind. Okay, you were right. does anyone else see that? i want one! “
For some viewers, the equation was instantly recognizable. “Is that the Queen’s Gambit on his T-shirt?” someone asked.
If you’re not familiar with the game of chess, David’s T-shirt equation is the opening move for Queen’s Gambit.
It is one of the oldest openings, beginning in the 15th century.th century and is still commonly played today.
The hit Netflix series about chess prodigy Elizabeth Harmon, starring Taylor-Joy, is named after the iconic chess opening.
At one point we had to dress up for a theme, but David totally won this round.
“A pop-up chess set can be opened or closed in any position,” he explained on a successful pitch. “The board’s unique design ensures that none of the pieces will flip over.
“These unique selling points make it an ideal travel set, but it also folds flat so you can easily store it on your bookshelf at home.”
Eventually all the Dragons except Bartlett made offers to David, but he ended up going to Peter and Toker, both taking a 10% share and donating £20,000.
