MILWAUKEE — One of Ash Henry’s favorite things to do when he comes home from school is drawing.

- Every year Milwaukee Public Schools hosts the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Speech and Essay Contest.
- The competition is held district-wide
- The winning student will be invited to present a speech and essay at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday celebration at the Marcus Center.
- Milwaukee’s MLK Birthday Celebration is now in its 39th year, making it one of the longest-running celebrations in the nation.
“I love drawing Sonic the Hedgehog and Mario.
“Painting makes me happy,” he added.
However, the drawing has been on the backburner in recent weeks as Henry has been working on a speech for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. of Milwaukee Public Schools and a speech for an essay contest.
His speech is entitled “Towards a World of Peace”.
Henry said it was part of Dr. King’s legacy.
“He wanted everyone to be treated equally, regardless of what they looked like or where they were from,” Henry said.
This is also one of the messages in Henry’s speech.
“There is so much hate in the world today. We are free, but many men and women have not been freed from the terror of racism,” Henry wrote. “Dr. Martin Luther King didn’t want us to live in a world of fear.”
In his speech, he urged people to “make a difference” and said change to a peaceful, hate-free world is not impossible.
His mom, Kiana, said she was very proud of her son.
“I can’t tell you how proud I am of him,” said Kana Henry. “Just knowing what he can achieve in this particular contest, just knowing he can keep moving forward and achieve a lot more.
He’s a sophomore with a message to make the world Dr. King envisioned a better place.
In his speech, Ash Henry said, “We must always love and act for all.” It’s a way to keep Dr. King’s dream alive.”
