Dozens of people were injured as 85 cars piled up while driving on I-39/90 between Janesville and Beloit on Friday, according to the Wisconsin State Patrol.
The injuries are not life-threatening, according to the agency.
Ken Bernier, owner of KB Towing and Recovery, was one of many towing companies that answered the phone on Friday night.
“It was smoky and bandit-like. I mean, it was crazy. There were cars on the fence, cars on fire, semi-finals everywhere. It was like a massive demolition derby.” Bernier said.
The Beloit Health System said they have treated 27 patients from the accident.
Vernier said it was one of the worst accidents he has ever dealt with and, based on the video he saw, he was lucky no one died.
“He got out of the car and seconds later his car was gone. If he was standing there, he just made it,” Vernier said.
State Patrol said the incident occurred during a “severe winter weather event.” It’s an event that caused the biggest pile-up Vernier had ever seen.
“Last year we had something similar. There weren’t as many cars, probably half as many, but yes,” Vernier said.
With more storms expected in the future, Bernier has a message for drivers planning to hit roads covered in snow and ice.
“Slow down and keep your distance. These semi-machines can’t stop quickly and stay in the car,” says Bernier.
