Milwaukee — The family of Dontre Hamilton, who was murdered by Milwaukee police in 2014, holds a birthday party in his memory.
He would have turned 40 on January 20th.
On April 30, 2014, Dontre Hamilton, a black man, was shot and killed multiple times in Red Arrow Park by now a former Milwaukee police officer.
Maria Hamilton said she hasn’t seen her son Dontre Hamilton every day since his death.
“I have a picture. I can’t hold him,” said Maria Hamilton.
After his death, Maria Hamilton recalled 40 days of grief, but said her loss gave her a new purpose.
“Dontré made me and my family obligated to help people. will be,” she said.
For Maria Hamilton, that meant helping other mothers across the country who lost their sons at the hands of police.
She said his death inspired people to fight for change.
“The way police investigate has changed. For this life, the way police officers get disability has changed,” said Maria Hamilton.
