A new initiative by Dominica’s top hotel group aims to empower local hospitality and tourism entrepreneurs.
The new GEMS Entrepreneurship Challenge will award a total of $45,000 East Caribbean dollars (approximately US$17,000) to three entrepreneurs to help grow their businesses.

The challenges include food and beverages, agriculture, fisheries and agro-processing, wellness-related products and services, entertainment and arts, technology, tour guides, excursions and transport services, health and safety, energy efficiency, marketing and media, according to GEMS. services, event management, etc.
Applicants will be evaluated on customer and brand equity, innovation, feasibility, and financial management, among other things.
“We have established the criteria used to determine eligibility, application selection, and evaluation for the Foundation’s Entrepreneurship Challenge Fund. Roles and Responsibilities of the Grant Selection Committee (GSC), Recruitment Process, financial information related to the grant are taken into consideration,” said Lizra Fabien, Director of Entrepreneurship at the GEMS Foundation.
“We encourage a wide variety of applicants and submissions by ensuring our application process is open and accessible. We accept applications from small businesses that demonstrate innovation and scalability.” says Fabien. “These organizations do not always have a long track record and we do not award grants based on organizational criteria of longevity.
