After an ordeal season marred by multiple stints on concussion protocol, Tua Tagovailoa broke his silence in a message on social media on Friday as he continues to prepare for his 2023 return.
The Dolphins quarterback suffered his second concussion of the season in Week 16 following an injury that kept Tagovailoa out of Miami’s final three games, including last Sunday’s 34-31 wild card loss to Buffalo. It has been out of the public eye since being hit. The 24-year-old has made his public comment for the first time in almost two months, posting a message on his Twitter showing his eagerness to enter the next chapter of his own career.
Tagovailoa tweeted. Proud of this last one and excited for the next one!”
Tagovailoa’s tweet comes at a time when his health continues to be a major topic of debate over the NFL.
The third-year QB’s recent protocol stint, which began after playing against the Packers on Christmas Day, comes months after extensive research into whether concussion protocols were being properly followed earlier in the season. League protocol has been updated. This initial inquiry was about the hard hitting he endured against the Bills, but the quarterback suffered a concussion against Cincinnati and was stretched off the field.
Despite lingering questions, Miami reportedly remains focused on keeping Tagovailoa as QB1 next season, as ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported ahead of Miami’s playoff loss. The next day, Dolphins general manager Chris Greer appeared to confirm the report after telling reporters that he had reported to the team that Tagovailoa was less prone to concussions than any other player.
“Tua Tagovailoa is our starting quarterback,” Greer added. “I have spoken with my doctor and fully expect him to be 100% back next year.”
For the season, Tagovailoa passed for 3,548 yards and 25 touchdowns in 13 starts and set a career-high with eight interceptions.
