Juneau, Wisconsin — The Dodge County court system is facing a shortage of prosecutors and currently has no district attorney.
The former prosecutor was no longer in his position, and multiple prosecutors began to retire at about the same time.
Dale Schmidt is serving his third term as Sheriff of Dodge County. He said many people in Dodge County have concerns about the changes in court, but they will be resolved.
“There will be a backlog. This can slow us down at times, but we want to stress to the community that their safety is not at risk here,” Schmidt said.
Former Dodge County DA Kurt Cromberg resigned in January. According to Schmidt, the court system is lacking because three DA assistants have recently retired.
Schmidt said he was aware that rumors were swirling that Dodge County didn’t have a prosecutor, but “that’s just not accurate.”
“One will be there until he retires on February 1, and one will likely be back in February,” he said. We have a full support staff to keep us moving in the right direction.”
Schmidt posted Sheriff’s Note for January. It included a timeline of events explaining how the shortage occurred.
In part, it reads:
The state has assigned retired prosecutors to Dodge County. While county officials address this shortage, they’re helping Caselords.
Schmidt said he wants the community to know that this will not affect law enforcement’s functioning in the community.
“The challenge here is short. This is not going to change our job as far as law enforcement is concerned. If there are individuals who have done something wrong that need to be arrested, they will be arrested,” Schmidt said. said.
Gov. Tony Evers said there were shortages statewide and that something would be done to help.
“We propose to have sufficient numbers to defend those charged with crimes and those who prosecute them. said Evers.
So while the issue isn’t going away anytime soon in Dodge County, steps are being taken to fill positions to get the court back on track.
Schmidt said the application process for the district attorney’s job has closed, and the county hopes to help Evers find someone for the position soon.
