Madison, Wisconsin — The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is helping clean up a butter spill caused by a fire at the Associated Milk Producers, Inc. facility in Portage, Wisconsin.
The fire broke out on Monday and the DNR was notified the next day.
DNR staff reported that about 20 gallons of butter had entered an adjacent canal through the storm drain. An absorption boom was deployed on the canal to contain the butter.

The butter was then removed.
The DNR noted that the storm sewers are now clear after a large amount of fire water was spilled during the firefighting effort.
Most of the butter that left the facility was carried through sewers to wastewater treatment plants. Since the incident, officials have removed butter from the factory. According to DNR, the treatment plant is operating effectively without interruption.
DNR says the environmental impact has been minimal so far. Investigation is ongoing.
