Destiny 2, the hit game from the original creators of the Halo saga, also has a companion app. The app is required to perform certain actions and access some options.
This means that if the app is not working properly, it will affect the overall experience of the game. Sadly this is exactly what is happening right now.
According to multiple reports, the Destiny 2 companion app is currently down or non-functional, but the issue is related to the game’s API.
Destiny 2 Companion App is down or not working due to disabled API
Social platforms such as Twitter are flooded with complaints about this situation. This issue is frustrating some Destiny 2 players who are unable to access the full game experience.
For almost a week of the holiday event, the app goes down shortly after it was down for a week or so after the season started.Glad I didn’t pre-order Lightfall, lack of quality control and inability to keep things timely became intolerable

That said, they all have explanations and are related to the game API. For those of you who don’t know, an API is a set of protocols that allow one core service to integrate with other services.
Destiny 2 disabled API causing issues
In this case, the main service is Destiny 2, and other services work via APIs such as companion apps. Other external products that can interact with your game also rely on the API.
The Destiny 2 Companion App is down because the Bungie team disabled the API. Apparently, we had to investigate multiple error codes affecting the overall experience.
The Destiny API will remain offline as the team continues to investigate the issue causing the numerous error codes. We are currently targeting a fix early next week, but will provide additional updates when possible.

As such, a fix for the issue could arrive next week, but we don’t have a specific date yet.
According to a Bungie staff member, the root of the problem is the implementation of the new Exotics. This causes serious problems with the API and causes an error code (read the whole thread here).
We will update this story as future events unfold.
