MILWAUKEE—History was made Friday as the first African-American woman to serve as sheriff in Milwaukee County.
Denita Ball took the oath of office Friday after winning the November election.
“I don’t think it’s really infiltrated. For me, it’s just changed places, but I’ve been working and I’m still working,” Ball said. .
To celebrate the occasion, she invited the community to an oath taking ceremony at the Milwaukee County War Memorial Center.
“I wanted to thank them for their vote of confidence and allow them to celebrate the occasion with me.” .”
The community was quick to show their appreciation.
“We’ve got your back, Sheriff Ball,” cried the crowd.
The new sheriff’s stepdaughter, Jennifer Harris, introduced the sheriff at the ceremony and explained the significance of the moment.
“This shows Milwaukee County that representation is important, but more than that, we deserve a county where we can live, thrive, be healthy and happy,” Harris said. “And Sheriff Ball will help us [do that]…”
Harris said the ball shows that health and well-being are key for Milwaukee moving forward.
Ball said she didn’t lose the significant credit of becoming the first African-American female sheriff in Milwaukee County. She said she wanted a young black girl to take this as an inspiration to achieve her goals that she set in her own heart.
She said she wants everyone to know that under her leadership, the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Department is focused on community engagement.
“I think it will be easier to get things done because we have community support.
Ball said there are challenges ahead, but she is ready to take on them.
