SANTA CLARA — Devo Samuel nearly broke.
Instead, the wide receiver left it to 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan not to get too emotional.
The 49ers’ first-round playoff game was still a big deal when Seattle defensive back Jonathan Abram tackled Samuel, got up, and twisted Samuel’s ankle.
The play could have helped turn the momentum of the game, as the 49ers beat the Seahawks 41-23 at Levi’s Stadium on Saturday.
“I think that made everyone feel better,” said Christian McCaffrey.
Abram’s play was obvious to everyone.
Samuel said. “And you can see that the definition of our team is his IGYB. Igot your back.”
Many of Shanahan and Samuel’s teammates were immediately enraged by the dirty-looking play.
“I was worried he might have an injury,” Shanahan said. “I kind of lost my mind about it. But you know, I was just curious. I didn’t like how it looked. I thought it looked pretty bad.”
“I think it pissed off a lot of people. I think it pissed off our team. I could feel our team reacting to it.”
The 49ers turned their anger on Point.
The 49ers, who were leading 23-17 at the time of the play, ended that drive with Brock Purdy’s 1-yard touchdown run. Charles stripped his Omenif after recovering his sack and Nick his bossa, the 49ers drove another touchdown.
Then it was fitting that Samuel delivered a dagger on a catch from Purdy that turned it into a 74-yard touchdown, with a big assist from Brandon Ayuk’s block along the left flank.
When the 49ers defeated the Seahawks for the third time this season, Samuel avoided injury from Abram and inflicted a little pain.
“It certainly hurt,” said Samuel. Just seeing how Kyle got off the sidelines definitely inspired our team. “
