There are dozens of wallpaper downloader apps for Linux, most of which allow you to get high-quality backgrounds from countless online sources and set them as your desktop wallpaper.
damask is another app debuting on Flathub this weekend.
Built using GTK4 and following GNOME HIG. damask A perfect fit for the latest Ubuntu desktops. Backgrounds are available from various popular sites such as:
- Today’s Microsoft Bing Wallpaper
- wallhaven.cc
- NASA Astronomy Photo of the Day (requires API key)
- Unsplash (must provide your own API key)
Only rubbing can have 1 You can enable these sources at any time (that is, you cannot enable Bing and NASA to update images between them). The app provides global options to adjust the refresh interval, run the app in the background, or automatically launch it on login.
Each wallpaper source has its own independent set of settings with unique configuration options.
For example, if you’re using Wallhaven, you can choose to filter anime, people, and general wallpapers. Select the background based on the dominant color. Then set the level of “purity” from perfectly safe to work to “rough” to absolutely unsafe to work with.
Bing’s backend settings allow you to select a specific Bing locale (because images of the day are often different for different countries). The manual refresh button is really useful only in Wallhaven or Unsplash sources as there is a much wider pool of images to rotate/select.
Both NASA and Unsplash require you to generate your own custom API key, but all available wallpaper sources work fine. It’s easy to do and both API keys are free for general use (but don’t squash the refresh button on Unsplash).
In all, damask is a simple app with one clear purpose. Get a new wallpaper every day (or every 5 minutes – whatever you choose) and change it automatically.
