One thing about creating playlists is that it’s really hard to keep up with the plethora of new music that comes out every week. Many artists exist in their own ecosystems and social spaces online, which doesn’t help discover all the gold. There are difficulties. That said, we believe in the art of (digital) crate digging.
I updated the playlist last Friday (January 27th) and did my best to include other joints I missed in late 2022 and early 2023. Awareness puts us on a new one. Let’s see the program.
We open this week’s playlist by honoring the life of Laura “Gangsta Boo” Mitchell, who died at the top of the year. The path Gangsta Boo has paved for other female rappers in the South is undeniable, and Three 6’s time with the Mafia cemented her place in the hip-hop annals. Add in GloRilla’s “FTCU,” featuring Gangsta Boo, and conclude with a short tribute that further proves how important Memphis is to culture.
Finesse2Tymes stays in Memphis, joins forces with Tay Keith for track ‘Still With It’ and Metro Boomin’s solid compilation Heroes & Villiers There are several songs that could have been on the list, but I chose ‘Feel The Fiyaaaah’ featuring A$AP Rocky and the late Takeoff.
DJ Drama is back with his Gangsta Grillz Grizzly, and his tape Paint the City with Iceware Vezzo is another strong entry in the catalog. In “Trippin” he joins Vezzo with his 2 Chainz in a scene-stealing turn. Back in Memphis, the late Young Dorf and Key Glock co-wrote ‘Thats How’ from the rapper’s posthumous album. paper root frank.
Back to Gangsta Grills in French Montana cola boys 6 Treated as a mixtape, the track “RZA” features Benny the Butcher, home of the Black Soprano family, at his best as usual.
DJ Premier’s work is always great to hear, and Legend lends his talents to Seattle’s Macklemore’s vocals on the track “HEROES” from his next album. BenAnd for listeners of a certain age group, the news that De La Soul’s catalog was coming to the streaming service was huge. “The Magic Number” by the veteran trio is the first of many and we can’t wait.
