Milwaukee — Violent crime remains a major focus in Milwaukee.
Milwaukee police said at a press conference Thursday that serious crimes have fallen 15% since 2021, but homicides have increased. In fact, Milwaukee broke the murder record three years in a row. In 2022 in Milwaukee he was the victim of 214 murders. In 2021, Milwaukee lost her 193 lives to murder. This is an earlier record.
Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson said the efforts of law enforcement, city leaders and local residents are critical to keeping crime rates down, especially when it comes to homicides.
“We all have a role to play, but it’s not just us playing a role, we all have to be in the game,” Johnson said.
Police Chief Jeffrey Norman said that while the cause of many murders remains unknown, there are several known contributing factors to the recent surge.
“What we do know is that conflicts, quarrels and violence have contributed to that increase,” Norman said.

When it comes to crime, Jones says there’s always a root cause.
“Police respond to crime, but what prevents crime is people having what they need,” she said. “Housing, jobs, good education: these are what deter crime. That is the true investment in people, in the human family.”
She hopes that Milwaukee can unite to reduce crime.
“This is going to be a lot of work if you want to be part of a community free of violence and oppression,” Jones said.
Mr Johnson said the city is making progress overall when it comes to serious crime, despite a significant increase in homicides. 18% less burglaries and 14% less robberies.
Despite these positive trends, Johnson said there is still work to be done.
“When people cause death and destruction, there is a price to pay,” he said. “You can’t have a functioning society if everyone thinks they can make their own rules. You just can’t.”
City leaders said they hope ongoing efforts will lead to better trends in 2023, and they hope to make Milwaukee safer for all to enjoy.
