Milwaukee — A Milwaukee nonprofit purchased a property to help LGBTQ+ youth who are homeless or aging from the social welfare system.
Courage MKE announced Thursday that a space near Walkers Point neighborhood will serve as a C2 apartment. Located at 2030 W. National Ave., the home is the first of its kind in Wisconsin and offers a supported independent living program.
“Once incarcerated, young people who have experienced homelessness find it difficult to follow the rules and are often evicted. More than just coaching residents on relationships, “we have a 24/7 staff to help create a purposeful community, including teaching daily life skills, budgeting, and cooking. A living apartment is just that – living alone.
“We envision a common living area where we hang out together, watch TV together, cook meals together. It is comforting to be around those who are We don’t just want young people to stay at home, they deserve to feel safe and supported at home. ”
Courage MKE opened Courage House, Wisconsin’s first home for displaced LGBTQ+ youth, in March 2019.

Since opening, Courage MKE has been nationally accredited for group homes in 2020 and accredited by the State of Wisconsin for accredited residential care programs in 2022. This ensures that operations and practices exceed state-sanctioned expectations and ensures that residents receive trauma-informed care.
In 2020, Courage MKE was accepted into the Ali Forney Center’s Technical Assistance Mentorship program. The Ali Forney Center, along with 12 small non-profit organizations nationwide, has provided significant guidance and support in the development of the C2 Apartments program.
Brad Schlaikowski, executive director of Courage MKE, said:
C2 Apartments will be partially renovated in Spring/Summer 2023 and will open in Winter. Current plans allow C2 Apartments to serve as a residence for his seven youths.
“This is another chapter in Courage MKE’s already strong story in Metro Milwaukee and Wisconsin,” said Dan Terrio, Courage MKE’s President and CEO. “We are committed to ensuring that young people are equipped with the life skills, knowledge and, above all, the support to thrive and become true community members. I believe that will do just that.”
