Cool Boy Bobby is a self-professed fan of Hamilton: An American Musical. This hugely popular Broadway play incorporates a variety of musical genres, including hip-hop, jazz, classic show tunes, and eye-popping numbers based on the life of Alexander his Hamilton. This eclectic medley of performance elements has since inspired Cool Boy Bobby to incorporate them into his teaching as a rich resource for high school students.
This effort subsequently spawned the “Hamilton” Listening X Project. This highlights a key element that makes hip-hop music useful for teaching the elements of poetry. Like the play itself, this listening project encourages the use of hip-hop to open the door to conversations about racial justice and anti-racism in America today.
Cool Boy Bobby advocated for the inclusion of hip-hop music in the teaching of English Language Arts (ELA) and said that through the Listening Project unit he designed, educators could increase their engagement with parts of American literature. said.
