The Kearney Mesa Community Plan, adopted in 2020, is expected to make changes to the Convoy District in 2023.
One of the changes is the addition of bike lanes. Bike lanes are part of plans to add alternative transportation to the area.
“I know that a parking study was just recently completed outlining which spaces could be lost, but the bigger question that remains unanswered is which will be impacted by other mitigations. Can we get enough parking spaces? That’s what we’re most interested in,” said San Diego City Councilman Kent Lee.
The number of nets is important because business owners in the area are concerned about the loss of about 300 parking spaces to bike lanes in this plan.
“We are not against bike lanes that are against prioritizing carts over horses. They occupy 288 spaces with no plan of where to put 288 cars.” said Sandy Tobin, owner of the Dumpling Inn.
Tobin says most of his customers drive to his location, and he can lose customers if he runs out of parking spaces.
“My business has high turnarounds and high volume, so we can keep the cost low for our customers, but if we take customers away, we have to change our business model by raising prices to make up for the loss of customers. We need to,” says Tobin. He said.
City leaders are considering adding angled parking and options for parking on side streets to alleviate the problem.
Construction of new bike lanes is expected to begin in the Convoy District in the first half of 2023.
