Based in Mirror, Alta., Community Futures East Parkland recently completed their latest marketing challenge.
The Marketing Plan Challenge began in 2017, where participants participated in a one-day training session before completing a marketing plan that was judged by a panel to determine the winner.

In 2020, the social media marketing challenge was born.
The November 2022 challenge provided business owners across the East Parkland Watershed with a calendar of content to create for growing their social media channels.
A total of $9,200 worth of prize money was awarded.
Weekly prizes were awarded during the challenge period, and four grand prizes were awarded at the end.
Weekly Challenges awarded prizes to the most advanced and most impactful teams and runners-up. Winners won $250 each and 2nd place received $150.
Ponoka’s Artisan Frame Studio improved the most in week 1, Bashaw Meat and Sausage had the most impact, with both Halkirk’s Very Important Pets and Bashaw’s Fresh Start Studio nodding as runners-up.
In Week 2, Castor’s The Purple Platypus was the most improved, Bashaw Farm and Building Supplies Ltd. was the most impactful, and Donalda’s Echoglen Gardens and Blackfalds’ Supernova Creations took second place.
In Week 3, Lacombe’s Deep Roots Farm took the most improved title, while Castor’s Cornucopia Gourmet Popcorn and Treats had the most impact. Castor’s The Stuffed Potato Co. and Bashaw’s Meeting Place Coffee Roasters were his No. 2 this week.
In the final week of the contest, the all-important pet returned to the board and won the Most Improved title, with Ponoka’s Torch and Teal winning for the first time and riding the board. Heather’s Yarn Haven, Coulee Market and Echoglen Gardens.
The grand prize winners were calculated based on Facebook insights showing each competitor’s growth and engagement.
Halkirk’s Very Important Pets Boarding Kennel and Salon won $1,000 as a fan favorite. Ponoka’s Torch and Teal Wins $1,000 Most Dynamic Business, Castor’s The Purple Platypus Wins $1,500 Most Improved Social Media Marketer, Bashaw Meats and Sausage Ltd. Most Influential Business in Social Media You have won $2,500.
A total of 38 participants have entered the 2022 challenge.
Community Futures East Parklands stretches from Alder Flats in the northwest to Bawolf in the east and Castor in the southeast, with Big Valley, El Nora, Blackfalds and Eckville at the southern end of its territory.
The purpose of Community Futures is to support small businesses, entrepreneurs and rural diversification.
