APPLETON, Wisconsin — Leaders in the northeastern Wisconsin city are pushing again for a new expansion of Amtrak’s Hiawatha line, which runs between Chicago and Milwaukee.
Leaders Appleton, Fond du Lac, Green Bay, Kaukauna, Menasha, Neenah, and Oshkosh expressed interest in consideration by the Federal Railway Administration’s Corridor Identification and Development program. The Corridor ID program is the first initiative under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.
“Our community stands to benefit from this Amtrak connection,” said Green Bay Mayor Eric Genrich. “Strengthening connections between New North communities should be a priority for us, and transportation is a key component of this effort.”
As part of Amtrak’s Amtrak Connect US plan, three daily round-trip flights from Green Bay to Chicago are proposed, with an initial journey time of 4 hours and 20 minutes. The initial travel time from Green Bay to Milwaukee is estimated to take just under three hours.
Appleton, Fond du Lac, Green Bay and Oshkosh will be four new stations along this proposed Amtrak extension.

“The extension of Amtrak’s service through Fox Cities has the potential to provide another great transportation option for residents,” said Appleton Mayor Jake Woodford. It also helps the region compete for talent in an incredibly tight labor market.”
Kaukauna, Menasha, Neena and Oshkosh are currently served by Amtrak’s Thruway I-41 bus service. All seven cities have stated in a joint letter that they believe the corridor meets the selection criteria outlined by his FRA.
Amtrak’s Hiawatha train currently operates 7 round trips daily. Between Milwaukee and Chicago.
