China’s Foreign Ministry announced on Monday that Foreign Minister Qin Gang will begin his term with a week-long visit to five African countries.
Qin, who until recently served as China’s ambassador to the United States, will visit Ethiopia, Gabon, Angola, Benin and Egypt from Jan. 9 to 16, spokesman Wang Wenbin said at a daily media briefing. In Egypt, Qin will also meet with the secretary general of the Arab League.
The new Foreign Minister follows in the footsteps of his predecessor, who has launched annual trips to Africa for over 30 years.
“This shows that China attaches great importance to its traditional friendship with Africa and the development of China-Africa relations,” Wang said.
The United States is battling China for influence in Africa, and President Joe Biden appealed to African leaders at a summit in Washington in December. China has become a major trading partner with the mainland, investing in infrastructure and mining projects.
Hata, 56, was appointed foreign minister on December 30. He succeeded his 69-year-old Wang Yi as Yang Jiechi as the government’s chief foreign policy officer.
Wang’s new position has not been announced, but according to his recent article on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website, Wang is the director of the foreign affairs department of the ruling Communist Party, a position held by Yang. be.
