Waunakee, Wisconsin — Cold and flu season can be a very stressful time of the year for parents. Drug shortages have contributed to stress this season.
As more children contract COVID-19, RSV, and the flu, parents are scrambling to find Tylenol and other over-the-counter medications for children.
With much of the United States experiencing shortages, Heather Walker, pharmacist at her hometown pharmacy in Waunakee, is struggling to keep up with demand.
“So if you’re looking at the warehouse just to see what kind of inventory you have, you don’t have a lot of inventory right now,” Walker said.
Walker’s pharmacy had one bottle of children’s Tylenol left on Monday, January 2nd, but it didn’t sit on the shelf for long.
Hometown Pharmacy customer Becky Conder received the last bottle.
“I’m going to get it for my three grandchildren. My daughter can’t find Down in Illinois where she lives.
Conder’s daughter works at a pharmacy in Illinois, and despite her connections, was unable to find over-the-counter medications for her children.
“She had twins, one of whom had the flu with a fever. All she could do was give them cold water baths,” Conder said.
The main reason for the shortage is increased demand, as the triple demic looms over us.
“It’s random. You may order immediately after checking the stock, but it may be all gone the next day, or all may be gone the same day.
If you can’t find an over-the-counter medication for your child, Walker says, call your health care provider to find the next best option.
“People are crushing Tylenol pills, crushing ibuprofen pills, or mixing them into something. Never do it yourself. Call your provider,” Walker said. rice field.
