Chad’s President Mahamat Deby met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday.
Mahamat Debbie visits Israel to open a Central African country embassy in the Jewish state, building on the diplomatic relations between the two countries established five years ago.
In 2019, during Netanyahu’s final term, he and Mahamat Debbie’s father, the late President Idris Debbie Itno, announced the re-establishment of diplomatic ties.
Elder Debbie, who ruled the Muslim-majority country for more than 30 years, was killed on the battlefield in 2021 fighting rebels. His son replaced the president as head of the military government.
Upon landing in Israel on Tuesday night, Debbie was greeted at the airport by Mossad Chief David Barnea. The Chadian delegation then headed to Mossad headquarters in Grillot to hold a celebration.
The Mossad has played a central role in maintaining quiet relations with Chad since 1972, and in recent years has been working towards full normalization.
“In our view, it is a very important relationship with a major country in the heart of Africa. reflects that.” shared Benjamin Netanyahu.

Netanyahu and Debbie will open their embassy on Thursday morning, though details of its location have yet to be identified. Most countries have embassies in Tel Aviv.
