Many Americans are proud of our country’s long history of entrepreneurship, dating back to historical figures like Alexander Graham Bell and Thomas Edison.
Last week, we heard an interesting story that shows that much of the country’s entrepreneurship is driven by immigrants. Researchers found that between 1990 and 2016, an immigrant inventor generated more than a quarter of all patents, and his 36% of American innovation came from immigrants.
It’s not all that surprising when you look at many of the big names, but America is a melting pot, so it’s easy to forget that a lot of innovation comes from all the great ideas marinated in the same pot.
Sergey Brin, co-founder of Google. Elon his mask of both Tesla fame and his newly reinvented Twitter now. YouTube co-founder Joad Kaleen is also an immigrant. Other well-known immigrant entrepreneurs include Jerry Yang (Yahoo!), Andy Grove (Intel), Hamid Ulukaya (Chobani) and Tony Ko (NYX Cosmetics). You can probably name many others.
For me, the study of immigrant inventors was another indicator of how important all company commitments to diversity, equity and inclusion are. We strive to include true diversity in every discussion at Marcum. That means we have a diverse workforce on our team. In today’s rapidly changing global environment, no company can afford to stick to the same old ideas. As this study shows, some of the best ideas can come from people who currently live on the other side of the globe.
As regular readers know, DEI is Marcum’s core business strategy and a core component of the brand. Fortunately, many of our headquarters and offices are located in very diverse cities, giving us the opportunity to tap into a rich talent pool. In 2022, we launched the Marcum Diversity Scholarship Fund to support career track education for accounting majors from minority groups.
DEI is central to career success and associate engagement at Marcum. This is at the heart of our recruitment and retention programs as well as our work culture. Our many Associate Resource Groups are a reflection of our commitment. Everyone who works for Marcum is fully aware of her Marcum priorities for DEI and her essential role in defining what constitutes Marcum Marcum.
This initiative will continue beyond 2023. We are an entrepreneurial company serving entrepreneurs. Throwing a welcome mat at innovators from all walks of life will continue to be a big part of that.
Monday is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. This holiday is a reminder of how far we still have to go in achieving Dr. King’s vision of true social and economic equality and in assessing the potential of each person. and inclusion have never been more important.
