Celebrate the idea that through grace and personal commitment, we can become better

“War is over,” chants “if you want,” a children’s choir on a recording of John Lennon’s classic Christmas song.

On Christmas Day 2022, we will be drawn to that if.

Americans are not overtly in an age of war per se, but conflict certainly defines our times. and left-wing contempt for each other, plunge into cultural and political silos, where we reinforce and share prejudices with like-minded peers. Blaming everyone who is not us.

In a season dedicated to peace, love and brotherhood, it is only natural to condemn such a climate and to enjoy the comfort of a day dedicated to its opposite, love, harmony and communion. For too many people, it seems natural to lament that if they could manage it, it would be over in just one day. For many of us, it may seem like it takes all our strength to hold back to get through a family holiday dinner.

But remember, they’re nothing new. Human history is a story of constant divisions, animosities, wars and struggles. But for now, we celebrate the idea that it doesn’t have to be and that we can be better people.

It is not imposed on us from the outside to defy the atmosphere of conflict and promote inclusion, acceptance and understanding. It is something that each of us develops from within ourselves.

In a spiritual sense, much of this season’s joy comes from an appreciation for the spiritual grace that paves the way for us to envision and work towards a world of universal peace and harmony.

In a practical sense, part of this joy also comes from the simple realization that grace makes you more than you are. No need to foster confusion, anger, or division. We can foster respect, compassion and unity by following an example set 2,000 years ago.

Enjoy the hilarious mayhem of the holidays. Take joy in the bosom of your faith, friends and family.

The promise of peace and harmony is not limited to just this one day of the year.
