MARVEL HIP HOP VARIANT COVER GUIDE
The third album by Tribe … Award Tour and Electric Relaxation are two of the better songs on this album
If you don’t know at least one song from this album and you were alive when it was released, you either really hate good music or live under a rock…just saying
Ain’t nothing but a G thang baby!
I wasn’t the biggest fan of De La growing up but they did sample Hall and Oates in a pretty cool way…how many people can say that?
Passin’ Me By is the only song I know from this album…it’s a good one
Probably one of the last rap albums I would listen to from beginning to end.
Let’s hope the new number 1’s that are coming out this fall from Marvel are as good as N.W.A.s first album.
I’m too old to know who the heck this guy is. Give me the old school rap any day!
Another artist I have never heard of…I’m getting old I guess.
Rosa Parks is the only song I listen to from this album but it’s a good one.
Before Flava Flav was looking for a wife on his reality show, he was making good music with Chuck D. |
This album wasn’t nearly as good as DMX’s first but Slippin was always a song that spoke to me.
The ex-Fugee member decided to branch out on her own. Like her music but not a fan of Ms. Hill myself.
The Wu-Tang Clan had such a big influence on me during my high school and college years that I actually started writing rap lyrics with some friends of mine. We called ourselves the Jew-Tang Clan! I was the Ol’ Jewish Bastard! Who says Khoi and Wade are the only funny ones in this group!!
Not an album I’m familiar with but the homage is pretty spot on.
I have no idea who this guy is…guess I’m too old
Not my favorite album by Eric B and Rakim, but I’m glad they’re being celebrated in this series of covers.
Last week I included a cover for what I thought was The Mighty Thor 1. Apparently there is this version as well. Not sure which is the one that will be used.
They Reminisce Over You is like my gateway drug into hip-hop…once I heard this song I was hooked!
Maybe I included both of these albums because they were both so good. Maybe I included them because they are actual swipes of each other. Either way if you weren’t a Nas fan before, you will be if you give a listen to either of these masterpieces.
This album taught me the significance of fat bags of skunk and white owl blunts. |
She was a weirdo but her songs were catchy…I love this cover!
Me showing my age again…WHO??? Great homage though
When I saw this guy in concert it was a very foggy day…weird right?
All I know about this chick is she was a youtube sensation and has a nice butt…I guess that’s plenty.
I never got into Drake…he was a little after my time.
Another rapper I have never heard of. This cover swipe is awesome though!
Just give me that Web Warriors car for a day. That is one sweet ride!
I still love listening to My Mind is Playin Tricks on Me whenever I can. |
I found more hip hop covers that I hadn’t covered (in parts 1, 2 and 3) so I will focus on those here. You’re not allowed to read this article if you’re a Royals fan…Khoi Cakes will ensure that doesn’t happen, won’t you Khoi?
A great album to swipe. This was all I listened to as a freshman in college. Too bad Wyclef decided he’d rather concentrate on his singing career as opposed to his career as an emcee.
Another tremendous album. I still listen to this every chance I get. Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide was the single from this album but the whole thing is unreal…if you have a chance listen to this album! The RZA at his best!
I don’t know Khalifa’s music at all but that Vision cover is really cool…even better than the original in my opinion.
Another classic album that I listened to often as a youngster. Code of the Streets is a great track.
I like a lot of Ice Cube’s music but never heard any songs from this album. There is a song called Givin’ Up the Nappy Dugout…wonder what that’s about?
Before Snoop Lion was Snoop Lion he was sippin’ gin and juice with Dr. Dre!
Another tremendous album that was constantly in rotation in my car. I’m starting to have a mid life crisis!
2Pac…another talented emcee that left this Earth too quickly. |
Another week another set of hip hop variant covers (click here, here, here or here for the previous articles) … here we go!
I’m probably going to shock and even anger a lot of people with this statement but I do not like Jay-Z’s music. I don’t understand why people find him to be such an incredible emcee but to each his own. Cool swipe though.
Never heard of Kid Cudi or this album but people were asking for this swipe yesterday at my LCS.
Another incredible spin-off by one of Wu-Tang’s bevy of talented emcees. I still listen to this album to this day. Its incredible that all these guys grew up in the same area together.
Don’t know J Cole but these are both pretty cool covers.
Awesome swipe…I personally don’t like the idea of the new Hulk but I’ll give this issue a chance and see what its like.
The “Wade” in neon is a nice touch…
The Lil Wayne cover is hilarious…I don’t know his music but he gets respect for coming up with such a clever album cover!
I still don’t understand how Spider-Woman is going to fight crime preggers but what do I know? |
Not interested in either of these…yuck.
Grandmaster Flash is one of the earliest rappers I remember. I find the homage to be hilarious!
Eminem is a very good emcee…this I know
An unbelievable album. I always smile when I hear some Slick Rick. He really knows how to tell a story with his raps.
Who? Cool swipe though.
Another great homage to a great album. I might have to buy this when it comes out…I love it!
A very cool homage but this character does nothing for me.
Moon Knight is a one of my favorites…Schoolboy Q isn’t. Oh well can’t win em all! |
Another great homage…simple yet effective.
I feel like I should know Schoolly D but I don’t. I know who Karnak is though I’ve never met him in person.
Can’t be the only one who thought Joy Division when they saw this? Marvel, when you are done with hip-hop will you explore other styles?
Pass | |
The art to the comic is better than the album cover in my opinion.
Since when is Mos Def Yasiin Bey? What the heck is this world coming to??
I do not like Digable Planets I find them to be annoying but this is great!
This one is great…it makes me laugh every time I look at it |
Some more hip hop variants are set to drop soon. Here are some of the ones that are coming up.
“Going to do some more Hip Hop covers this week. Before I do, I wanted to get on my soapbox for a few minutes. Comics are FUN! For me, hunting for hard to find books and collecting them is a way for me to relieve stress. There is nothing I like to do more than dig through hundreds of long boxes for hours on end for a few hard to find gems. I also love to come to the CBSI pages to see what people picked up recently, what character they think will pop in the near future or what book they are enjoying at the moment. The world is made up of millions of different people with all kinds of different tastes. Just because one person loves a book and thinks it will be the next hot book doesn’t mean we all have to agree with that person. Debating a book’s relevance is a great thing as long as it is done in a constructive way. Remember this is a hobby for most of us and hobbies are supposed to be enjoyable! With that, I will get off my soapbox and bring on the next batch of covers! Keep the comments going guys! I don’t respond in my articles but I read every single one of them and take all suggestions good or bad!” –2017
Another week another set of hip hop covers!
