Ashwaubenon, Wisconsin — It might be a cold and snowy day, but Jesse and Holly Colts were happy to talk about camping.
They are the owners of Huckleberry Acres Campground in New London.
“When we opened online reservations to the general public on January 1st, we saw a little more reservations than before,” says Jesse Koltz.
Interest in local outdoor activities such as camping and RVs has skyrocketed in recent years during the pandemic and rising fuel costs.

At least in a place like Hucklberry Acres, that doesn’t seem to be much of an expectation.
“Half of the summer is already booked, and we’re getting a little more,” says Jesse Koltz. “Usually it happens closer to May, but this happened when it opened to the public on January 1st.”
Hucklberry Acres is one of the vendors meeting potential customers at the Green Bay RV & Camping Expo and Resch Expo in Ashwaubenong this weekend.
The event will run until Sunday.
Camping spots have gone up in price over the last few summers. On the RV and camper side, both are popular and can be hard to come by.
After a record sales year in 2021, the RV Industry Association said RV deliveries have settled into more mundane numbers in 2022.
Steve Neville, president of Quietwoods RV, said this helped normalize what was available to customers.
“Production is currently meeting demand, so dealers are holding inventory and our lots are now full,” he said. “We are ready.”
While numbers may not hit the stratospheric levels of the past two years, Neville sees still good sales going forward for the Sturgeon Bay-based business.

There are several quiet woods in eastern Wisconsin.
“There’s nothing better than someone buying a campervan from us, going on a nice trip to Yellowstone or something, and coming back and telling us what they’ve done and their campervan experience. “It’s been a lot of fun,” Neville said.
Hucklberry Acres recently converted several rustic sites into long-term seasonal sites that were fully booked by the middle of last summer. Colts says he regularly sees new faces at the campground.
“Just… last year I helped quite a few people: ‘I just got a new camper,’ and they said, ‘Where’s my site? Help me put it back together.’ Will you give it to me?” he said.
