Corpus Christi, Texas — Several more new businesses are opening stores in the downtown Corpus Christi district.
Much of that momentum is also due to the TIRZ dollar backing.
If you’ve been downtown recently, you’ve seen the signs of new business coming.
For Jimmy Canela, owner of VNP Gallery, putting a new store downtown was no easy task.
“We just happened to be here on People’s Street because we wanted to consider all our options and stay true to downtown,” he said.
Canela’s shop specializes in used clothes. We have works from the 70’s to the early 2000’s. He currently has a store on Water Street, but he was looking for a bigger store.
More than anything else, Canela said he is excited about the opportunities that come with doing business downtown.
“There are a lot of incentives available, the opportunities are there, just go and look for them,” he said.
Hybrid Records owner Carlos Cooper didn’t flinch when he chose downtown to open a store last April.
“Having done business in another part of the city for six years, I always thought downtown was kind of cool in terms of a lot of potential,” he said. “The opportunity has come to move here. I’ve always wanted to do it.”
Cooper said his storefront wouldn’t have been possible without the funding of the Downtown Management District and Reinvestment Zone or the guidance of TIRZ.
“There’s a certain mentality about downtown, but I think it’s outdated at the moment, and people are starting to realize there’s a lot of opportunity here,” he said.
Alyssa Barrera-Mason, executive director of Downtown Management, said TIRZ will receive some dollars from downtown property taxes and reinvest the money in business owners looking to relocate and participate in revitalization efforts. said it does.
Recent additions to downtown new businesses include Hypebyke, Cafe Calypso, Hybrid Records, Produce Bar and Produce Goods.
More stores are slated to open soon, including the Retro Arcade, which will take over the former Aria nightclub on Chaparral Street. A new bakery called Central Kitchen will open next door to the Executive Surf Club.
“We have about 15 other projects in development downtown and are working hard to get about 30 more to that starting line,” she said.
Barrera-Mason says her team will continue to bring new businesses and breathe new life into what it means to live and work in downtown Corpus Christi.
“It really is downtown day and night, even compared to seven years ago. This downtown Marina Arts District alone has seen $72 million in private sector investment.”
