NEW YORK (AP) — Giannis Antetokounmpo could feel the Bucks playing with more energy and a shift in their confidence on three-point shots.
“I made one, then I made a second,” he said. “Then we made a third one.”
And soon, their 17-point deficit was gone.
Antetokounmpo had 22 points and 10 rebounds as Milwaukee rallied in the second half to beat the New York Knicks 111-107 on Monday night.
Joe Ingles scored a season-high 17 points, and Brook Lopez also scored 17 for the Bucks. The Bucks made 12 3-pointers after trailing 70-53 with five minutes left in the third quarter.
“I think in the long run we’re going to make a lot of those shots,” Ingles said.
Lopez made what snapped a 97 all-tie before Drew Holiday, who was benched after committing three fouls in the first 4 1/2 minutes, scored five straight points in Milwaukee. The Bucks capped it off at the free-throw line, snapping the Knicks’ four-game winning streak and rallying well after allowing a season-worst 51 points in the first quarter loss to Charlotte on Friday.
Jalen Brunson scored a career-high 44 points and added 7 assists for the Knicks. Julius Randle tallied his 25 points, 16 rebounds and 5 assists, but from three scoring points he was 12-1.
The Knicks had an 8-game winning streak and a 4-game winning streak on a 5-game skid and hoped to continue the streak until the halfway point of the schedule. They fell 22-19.
Ingles, who didn’t play for the Bucks until last month after recovering from a torn ACL in his left knee and missing the first 29 games, fueled his comeback with five 3-pointers.
“It’s great to finish the game. Of course, it’s great to be in those situations,” Ingles said.
After winning 0-9 in the first half on the first possession of the third quarter, Randle eventually made a 3-pointer and his free throw stifled a 13-2 spurt midway through the period to close the gap by 6 points. Spread out to 70 to 53. .
After a Randle three-point play, the Knicks were still leading by 16 with 2:25 remaining, but made another basket in the quarter as Milwaukee finished with a 13-2 run and trimmed to 78-73. I couldn’t.
Obi Toppin started the fourth with a 3-pointer, but Lopez, Grayson Allen and Ingres followed with three straight runs to give Milwaukee an 82-81 lead to the Bucks.
“I think we didn’t close the third out very well, and then we got the fourth start in the same way, and that’s probably the biggest problem,” Knicks manager Tom Thibodeau said.
Neither team led more than three again until Holiday’s 3-pointer made it 103-99 with 47 seconds to go.
Brunson’s aggressive start quickly got Holiday into foul trouble and relegated him to the bench within four and a half minutes. But the Bucks big man missed all eight 3-point attempts and was far more effective in defending Randle at 12-1.
Branson went just 1-6 in the second round before breaking with Immanuel Quickley scoring 13 points and the Knicks taking the lead 51-46.
