Brother says he charged his rental Tesla six times in one day

Xaviar Steavenson and his sister Alice recently rented a Tesla and drove it from Florida to Wichita, Kansas. According to Stevenson, the battery was draining “faster than it charged”, so he had to stop by just six times a day to recharge the rental.

Business Insider reports that Steavenson first showed he was driving for two and a half hours before recharging. However, he and his sister “had to stop every hour to 1.5 hours to charge for an hour, an hour and a half, two hours,” he said.

“It was $25 to $30 to recharge,” Stevenson noted, and in just one day he and his sister Alice “stopped six times to recharge at that cost.” Hertz’s website says that Tesla rentals are “always cheaper than gas,” but he added that wasn’t the case for him.

Stevenson was reportedly told by a Hertz agent that the company “doesn’t know why we’re having problems.” He also claimed his agent told him that he “only got a call from Tesla” that day.

Asked for comment by Insider, a Hertz rep said the company “has not seen a significant increase in customer inquiries about rental EV batteries.” However, “battery range varies by vehicle manufacturer and can be affected by multiple factors such as weather and driving conditions.”

According to Stevenson, Hertz recommended picking up a new vehicle at the nearest branch. He did so, but said he came home in a “Nissan Rogue Sport” because “there wasn’t a Tesla there, not even an equivalent” in the place.
