A new tool called BRAW Toolbox brings native Blackmagic BRAW support to Apple’s Final Cut Pro. Pre-order at a limited-time discount on the Mac App Store.
The BRAW Toolbox allows Mac users to import Blackmagic RAW files directly into Final Cut Pro without transcoding. This extension prepares all the footage before importing, so the user can change his RAW metadata and transfer from another his BRAW video clip.
Users can also save presets for specific metadata attributes. RAW metadata can be changed at any time, even after importing into Final Cut Pro, and categories such as ISO, exposure, color temperature, and tint can be keyframed.
The BRAW Toolbox comes with a Metadata View that lets you view all parts of BRAW metadata directly within the Final Cut Pro inspector.
Other features include automatic decode quality options for HD and UltraHD projects, and the ability to work with lower decode quality where the “Global Settings” option forces full quality before export.
Black Magic RAW
Blackmagic Design engineers released their own RAW codec in 2018 to solve the problems of traditional video codecs. These codecs are fast, but their limitation to 10-bit and the 4:2:2 video filter used reduces color detail, thus sacrificing quality.
The BRAW codec moves part of the demosaicing process from your computer’s CPU to your camera for efficient encoding and a new high-performance RAW experience. It uses noise management, sensor profiling, and new edge reconstruction algorithms to produce high-quality cinematic images with deep, sharp detail and image separation.
price and availability
The BRAW Toolbox is available on the Mac App Store for $79.99. However, the first week of launch is available at 50% off. No free trial, only available as a one-time payment.
