Bryan, Texas (KBTX) – Community members and city officials met Wednesday to learn more about the local economy. Despite the economy showing growth, one of his local business owners told KBTX that he is still struggling in certain areas.
Rayne Knight is the founder of CR Systems, Inc. and Aggieland Roofing, Inc. and a proud Aggie who has never left since graduation.
“We opened 26 years ago. Then we started housing,” Knight said. “I decided to get into this business because I thought this could really be something. It’s been great.”
Like other local businesses, Knight said the success of her business depends on the economy.
“The best thing about Aggieland is that we are in an isolated bubble. I’m not saying we didn’t struggle, we did a lot more planning and brought in more inventory than usual, it took a lot more time to get the product And the cost of everything has skyrocketed,” she said.
Another issue Knight’s local business continues to face is the need for more skilled workers.
“We’re still hiring, and we’re actively working on it. We’re trying to get new workers in the spring and fall so we can get them acclimatized by the summer,” Knight said. Like we’re trying to hire from high school or really anywhere.We currently have 76 employees.We can always use more.One of the things we learned in today’s meeting is the employee housing challenge. At the Bryan-College Station Chamber of Commerce’s economic outlook meeting on Wednesday, business leaders concluded that 2022 data points to record job openings, historically low unemployment and low labor force participation. increase.
College Station City Chief Development Officer Natalie Lewis told KBTX that the Brazos Valley private sector has made history despite economic struggles.
“Historically, we’re home to Texas A&M, so much and most of our work is in the public sector, whether it’s Texas A&M, the school district, College Station, or Brazos County,” Ruiz said. said Mr. “But in 2022, we really hit an inflection point and now outnumber private employment.
