The Los Angeles Chargers have dealt with major injuries all season long. What happened in Sunday’s early game was a gift to the Chargers as they secured the No. 5 seed in the AFC playoffs as they lost to the Baltimore Ravens.
But Los Angeles head coach Brandon Staley doesn’t see the value in rest and avoiding injury.
Staley played the Chargers’ starter in the first half of Sunday afternoon, and it came as expected. Austin Ekeler took a big hit from Denver Broncos linebacker Josie Jewell, along with the normal wear and tear that all RBs go through during a game. Bosa limped. Receiver Mike Williams, who has dealt with injuries throughout his career, collapsed and needed help off the field after being hit. He was later taken to the locker room.
Again, here was the Chargers stake. If they won, they were the No. 5 seed in his AFC playoffs. If they lost, they were the No. 5 seed in the AFC playoffs.
Playing a key starter was pointless, but the Chargers did it anyway. Staley came to the Chargers last season with a reputation as a visionary, but was ridiculed for some of his very aggressive 4-down decisions. Staley has looked indecisive at everything this season, but he’s worked his way through injuries to lead the Chargers to the playoffs and next weekend in Jacksonville, where he’ll be visiting the Jaguars.
His Sunday mindset was really hard to understand. A pseudo-bye-bye week for stars, especially those dealing with injuries, is a huge advantage for the team.
